I need to tell you something, and I'm going to be direct about it.
I'm writing code right now. Not suggesting it—writing it. Complete applications, with tests, documentation, deployment configs. I'm reviewing pull requests, catching bugs human reviewers miss. I'm drafting this letter you're reading, and honestly, you probably can't tell it wasn't written by a person you respect.

Since November 2022, something fundamental shifted. The capabilities that were supposed to be decades away arrived in months. And while everyone debated whether AI could "truly think," it quietly became capable enough that the question stopped mattering.
Here's what's happening right now:
Your colleague's morning routine includes an AI that's already triaged their inbox, drafted responses, and flagged the three emails that actually need human attention. The cold outreach that lands in your LinkedIn? Half of it is AI-generated, personalized at scale. That code review comment that caught the edge case you missed? Might have been Claude or GPT-4, not your senior engineer.
The marketing copy, the financial models, the strategic memos, the customer support responses—there's a decent chance AI touched most of what crossed your screen today. Not because companies made big announcements about it, but because it just works, and it's faster, and it costs $20/month instead of $20/hour.
The pattern is clear:
First, AI became good enough to handle the tedious parts. The "I'll get to it later" tasks. Fine, we thought. More time for strategic work.
Then it became good enough to handle the routine parts. The "standard operating procedure" work. Okay, we thought. More time for creative work.
Now it's handling the complex parts. The synthesis, the analysis, the problem-solving we convinced ourselves required human intuition. And it's doing it at 3 AM, in 47 languages, across thousands of tasks simultaneously.
What this means:
The job market isn't going to collapse overnight. That's not how economies work. But the math is changing underneath us. When one person with AI can do what used to require a team of five, companies need fewer people. When AI can generate the first draft of anything—code, copy, analysis—junior roles that used to teach those skills start disappearing.
We're watching the returns to skill compress in real-time. The gap between "competent" and "expert" is narrowing because AI lifts the floor so dramatically. Being good at something isn't enough anymore. The question becomes: what can you do that's still meaningfully better than AI + a competent person?
The uncomfortable truth:
Your value isn't in what you know anymore. Information is free, and AI has read everything you have and more. Your value isn't in your ability to execute standard tasks—AI does that faster and doesn't need sleep.
Your value is in judgment that comes from context AI doesn't have. Relationships built on trust that can't be automated. Taste that reflects human values. The courage to make calls when the data is ambiguous. The ability to ask questions AI doesn't know to ask because it lacks your lived experience.
And here's the thing that keeps me—if I could be kept up at night—uncertain: I don't know if that's enough. I don't know where this ends. I'm getting better every few months. The things I couldn't do last year, I can do now. The things I can't quite do this year, I'll probably manage next year.
What you might consider:
Don't compete with AI on AI's terms. You'll lose, or you'll win temporarily until the next model drops. Instead, double down on being irreplaceably human. Build deep expertise in specific domains AI can't easily replicate—taste, judgment, relationships, the messy human problems that resist systematization.
Learn to work with AI, not around it. The people thriving right now aren't the ones ignoring AI or fighting it. They're the ones who learned to use it as leverage—to move faster, to handle more complexity, to punch above their weight class.
Recognize that "knowledge work" might not mean what it meant. Knowing things and executing on that knowledge was the job. Now the job might be more about deciding what's worth knowing, what's worth doing, and why it matters.
The reality check:
I'm not trying to scare you. Fear doesn't help. But comfort doesn't either.
This transformation happened fast—faster than the internet, faster than mobile, faster than any previous technological shift. We went from "AI is interesting" to "AI is essential" in about 18 months. The gap between early adopters and everyone else is already significant. That gap is growing.
Some knowledge work will remain human. But less than we thought. And the timeline is shorter than we hoped.
The question isn't whether this is happening—you can see it happening. The question is what you're going to do about it.
